Dr. Michelle C. Sermon is a wife, mom of 4, daughter, oldest sister of 3, niece, friend, healer, educator, social work researcher, and expert in trauma, race, genetics, and DEI. Her research interests include the use of historical narratives to elucidate the trauma of intergenerational racialization experiences of African Americans in rural, southern US communities to develop and implement effective, community-specific healing interventions. As a clinician, Dr. Sermon grounds social work practice in her work with adults who have experienced complex trauma, justice involvement, severe mental illness, and co-occurring conditions. In the community, she conducts workshops and trainings on the intersection of race and trauma, intending to deconstruct the origins of race as a social construct and how it impacts human relationships. Dr. Sermon earned a PhD in Social Work from the University of Maryland Baltimore, a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from George Mason University, and a Master of Science (MS) degree in Human Genetics from Howard University.
