Chequered Past

30th September 2007: The Rookies That Rose in the Rain

Listen Later

On this day in Formula 1 history, rain, resilience and rivalries took centre stage.

We relive the 2007 Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji, where Lewis Hamilton mastered torrential conditions to tighten his grip on the championship while Heikki Kovalainen claimed a breakthrough podium.

We celebrate the birthday of Jochen Mass, a German all-rounder remembered for both triumph and tragedy.

We revisit the 2001 United States Grand Prix, where Mika Häkkinen took his final career victory at a race that carried symbolic weight just weeks after 9/11.

We head to Jerez in 1990 as Alain Prost cut Ayrton Senna’s title lead in a dramatic Spanish Grand Prix overshadowed by Martin Donnelly’s horrific crash.

And we finish in Montreal in 1979, where Alan Jones and Gilles Villeneuve lit up the Canadian Grand Prix as Williams announced itself as a true powerhouse.

It’s the story of rookies, champions and challengers – all shaping the sport on the 30th of September.
