Cognitive Dissonance: The most prolific psychological plague of our time. There are two ways to be fooled:
One is to believe what isn't true.
The other is to refuse to accept what is true.
Sometimes people hold a core belief that is very strong. When they are presented with evidence that works against that belief, the new evidence cannot be accepted. It would create a feeling that is extremely uncomfortable, that's cognitive dissonance.
Because it's so important to protect the core belief, they will rationalize, ignore, and even deny anything that doesn't fit within with that core belief.
