While fire is a necessary part of the earth's development, it can quickly snuff out life.

Put yourself in a less-developed country and the effects can be even more devastating.

Jean Schanen found herself in a place where fire could have made it so, and let's acknowledge this could amount to a trivialization of the story, she wouldn't have been able to tell this story.

Spoiler alert: she survived. But the story is harrowing, nonetheless. It's a story she told in August of 2015, another in a series of stories we've shared from a night when the theme was "The Great Outdoors."
