Session 319: Surf’s Up on the Ego Ocean

Welcome to a cosmic breakdown of Session 319 from The Early Sessions, Book 7 of the Seth Material, recorded on February 13, 1967. This session is a total vibe, brought to you by the New Awareness Network. Grab a snack and relax as we look at why your ego might be acting like a middle manager who refuses to take a vacation.

The Ego: Just a Wave in the Surf

Seth starts things off with a killer metaphor. Imagine the "whole self" is a massive ocean. Your ego? It’s just the topmost wave. It’s not a separate entity; it’s just the part of you that’s currently catching the light.

  • The Tumble: The ego is meant to rise, do its thing, and then "tumble under" to let other parts of the self take a turn.
  • Frozen Motion: Problems start when the ego tries to stay on top forever. Seth calls this "frozen motion."
  • The Quote: "If you compare the whole self with an ocean, then the topmost wave at any given time would represent the ego. It is not by or of itself a separate thing, but part of the whole, forever changing, to return to the whole and be tumbled under and emerge again in new form."

Ruburt’s "Mom Issues" and the Sweater Saga

Seth gets personal with Ruburt (Jane Roberts), explaining that physical symptoms—like swollen feet and sore knees—weren't just random bad luck. They were basically the ego’s way of throwing a tantrum because it didn't want to change.

  • Rigid Vibes: Ruburt's ego got stuck in a "rigid framework," trying to manhandle more intuitive, feminine aspects with raw logic.
  • The Sweater Incident: In a hilarious but stressful move, Ruburt tried to prove he was "mature" by ignoring his subconscious fears of his mother. He wore her sweaters "night and day in a frenzied attempt to prove" they wouldn't hurt him. Spoiler: The subconscious wasn't buying it.
  • The Knees: Apparently, sore knees were a throwback to childhood punishments at Saint Vincent’s. Seth basically says, "Hey, stop punishing yourself for not being perfect."

The Envelope Experiment: Psychometry Hits

The session includes an experiment where Jane (in trance) holds a sealed envelope and tries to "see" what’s inside. The object was a rectangular strip of linen artist's canvas. Jane’s hits were pretty impressive:

  • Texture: She picked up on a "sturdy" feel and a "stubble" or "woven" texture.
  • Visuals: She saw "small squares" (the weave of the canvas) and "brilliant" colors like red and yellow (the paintings the canvas was meant for).
  • The Car Connection: She kept seeing an old car and gasoline. This seemed off until they realized it connected to Tom, the guy at the Art Shop who sold them the canvas and constantly complained about his old sports car.
  • The Details: She noted the object was "rectangular," had "holes in it" (tack holes from when it was stretched), and looked "torn" (the frayed edges).

Final Vibes and Homework

Seth wraps it up by reminding us that the stability of the "whole self" depends on being mobile. If you’re feeling stiff or stuck, maybe your ego is just trying too hard to stay at the top of the wave.

  • The Quote: "When it attempts to hold the upper position indefinitely, there is frozen motion and built-up pressures, but there will be the inevitable tumbling under."
