Covert contracts are the unspoken, unacknowledged, and unexpressed expectations we place on others and ourselves to show up in relationship in a specific way. They are secret agreements that degrade and destroy trust, intimacy, and connection over time. Resentment, frustration, and anger can arise when we are operating within covert contracts that do not align with our values. The key to disrupting these relationship-killers is to establish clarity around what we truly value, communicate that openly and honestly with others, and become willing to be uncomfortable in the process of creating more authenticity in our relationships.
