34 – Technology and Your Future

We are talking about technology and its impact on your future. Remember, “Today is the first day of your future.” There are factors about attitude, perspective, and phases we go through that are affected by the growth of technology. Always be aware of game-changing events; technology is just one of those areas that have changed and accelerated drastically over the last 30 years.
Think about how people view events from the past and events in the future. Have you seen the commercial where people categorize “good” events and “bad” events in their lives with color-coded sticky notes? The point is that most people view the past as mostly bad and the future as mostly good. The point of the commercial is to stimulate people to plan for their future. Younger people tend NOT to plan. I invite you to take a look back at my podcast episodes #23 and #24 about goals and HOW TO MAKE THEM WORK! Most people assume that their choices, dreams, and goals dim as they go forward into the future. YOUR DREAMS AND GOALS SHOULDN’T NARROW!
I have several examples to emphasize my point about technology, change, and the future:
* There was a young woman in my coaching classes who worked in the beauty industry. I urged her to look at her future, and the fact that she will have to change. The fact is that most women don’t look at older women in their 60+ years to advise them about beauty.
* In the late-90’s, the consensus was that big retailers would drive small businesses out. It didn’t happen because the onset of technology and the web allowed small companies to market themselves around the globe just as any large company would.
* Think about how technology allows people to market themselves on social media in a way that’s not them. They can mask how old they really are.
Most people assume that younger people are better at technology, apps, and programming—and that older people are not. The advance of internet technology has put blinders on age. The truth is that even for someone who is 50+, there are plenty of things to do and enjoy. It all comes down to attitude. Consider the following examples:
* When I was a young man, I worked as a waiter. I developed a good attitude about the job because I looked at the job as my opportunity to make a couple’s evening very special. That made it a great job.
* I recently saw some workers outside an office building pouring asphalt and curbs. I observed that some seemed happy, and some seemed overwhelmed with the hard work. Of course, the work was hard for them all, but the difference was in those who took pride in their work, accomplishment, and the finished product.
You can develop a passion and attitude for life at whatever age you are. There are numerous hobbies and activities for people over 50. If you choose not to plan or invest in your future, then that’s your choice, but you have no right to complain or be jealous of those who do.
If you want to increase your luck, then DO more things and be more aggressive. Have a better attitude and plan for your future. Some opportunities will come your way, and you just have to grab them.
