Session 347: Breaking the Pattern and Finding the Chill

Recorded on the evening of June 19, 1967.

Welcome to a deep dive into some vintage wisdom. If you’ve been feeling a bit rigid or stuck in a loop, Seth has some pretty humorous and insightful takes on how to shake things up and get the energy flowing again.

The Great Pattern Break-Up

Seth is a huge fan of throwing a wrench into your daily grind. Apparently, staying in the same routine for too long makes your psyche a bit too "rigid."

  • Vacation as Shock Therapy: Seth suggests that a change of schedule and frequent trips are basically "shock therapy" for the soul. He notes that breaking up the "nursery school pattern" with a vacation is most beneficial.
  • The "Away-Environment": Keeping up an "away-environment" as long as the weather permits is a massive preventive measure. It forces a "stir of thought and psychic activity."
  • Saratoga is In, Mom is Out: While a trip to Saratoga gets the green light, Seth gives a humorous hard pass on visiting the mother, advising Ruburt not to "waste any time wondering about the matter."
  • Fighting Rigidity: Frequent weekend trips or even camping are encouraged because they "automatically interact against any kind of rigidity."

The Lag: Why Your Body is a Slow Learner

One of the most interesting insights here is the "lapse" between feeling better mentally and actually seeing it in the physical world.

  • Mental vs. Physical: Seth explains that the mental state is radically improved, but there is a "lapse here for physical expression." Just because you’ve changed your mind doesn’t mean the body gets the memo instantly.
  • Cues to Action: These are little triggers that make you feel old symptoms. Seth notes, "The overall condition has indeed remarkably improved... and there is no distortion here."
  • The Reversal Process: Recovery isn't just about feeling good; it’s about stopping a destructive process that is already in motion. "Such an action requires enormous energy alone, for it is the stoppage of a process which is in itself action."
  • Ghost Symptoms: Those annoying morning symptoms? Seth calls them "the ghost." They are the vanishing power of the illness and no longer have the power to frighten the personality.

The Weird Science of Stiffness

Seth gets into the nitty-gritty of why Ruburt was feeling stiff, and it involves some questionable dietary choices and a mystery chemical.

  • Pectorillin and Fluids: Seth identifies a chemical (phonetically "Pectorillin") that causes fluid retention near joints.
  • The Culprits: This chemical interaction was apparently "aggravated by beer consumption, and also by the drinking of whole milk." So, maybe skip the milkshakes and brews if you're feeling creaky.
  • The Salt Factor: While salt was mentioned as a past connection, it wasn't the main villain this time.

Chill Remedies for Recovery

To get things moving again, Seth suggests a very "summer-vibe" checklist:

  • Sunlight as Symbol: "Reasonable daily exposure to the sun is physically beneficial to him, and symbolically beneficial, in the sense that the sun is light."
  • The Healing Sea: If you can get to the seashore, do it. "The sea is especially healing."
  • Warm Peanut Oil: Massage in some warm peanut oil (don't keep it in the fridge!) to loosen up the neck, shoulders, and knees.
  • Gentle Yoga: A little bit of gentle stretching is now officially Seth-approved for recovery.
