353 - Dale Scott

Listen Later

Dale Scott is a former Major League Umpire who was present for some iconic games, including the 2001 World Series, seven weeks after 9/11, as well as being last umpire to ever eject the infamous Billy Martin. But Dale's story was unique even among those associated with baseball; in 2014 he made a bold decision and publicly came out as gay. In his new memoir The Umpire Is Out: Calling the Game and Living My True Self, he talks about being involved in the game while keeping a secret, his decision to reveal all in 2014, the response from players and fellow umpires, and his memories of the game - including Game 5 of the 2015 ALDS between Toronto and Texas and the 7th inning that broke the game. The book is out now. Visit umpiredalescott.com for more information on his book and tour.
