Andrei Chikatilo, later known as the Butcher of Rostov and the Rostov Ripper, was convicted of murdering 52 people over a 12 year period during the Cold War and through the eventual collapse of the USSR in 1991. The judge who oversaw his case even admitted that one of the main reasons why Chikatilo evaded capture for so long was due to the “refusal of the Soviet Union to acknowledge that such crimes existed.” Chikatilo brutally strangled, stabbed, and mutilated dozens of young women and children and was eventually executed by a single gunshot to the head on February 14th, 1994.
