37 - Atomic Habits Chapter 14: How to Make Good Habits Inevitable and Bad Habits Impossible

Listen Later

On this episode of What's on Your Bookshelf, Denise and Sam discuss Chapter 14: How to Make Good Habits Inevitable and Bad Habits Impossible from James Clear's book, Atomic Habits.

Success can depend on more than just making good habits easy. It can also rely on making bad habits harder to maintain. Commitment Devices are choices made in the present that ensure better behavior in the future. For instance, if you tend to overeat, purchasing food in individual packages instead of bulk size can be a helpful device. Likewise, if you want to get in shape, scheduling a yoga session and paying ahead of time can help.

Commitment devices are beneficial because they help you take advantage of your good intentions before you can fall victim to temptation. By making bad habits difficult in the present, they increase the likelihood that you will do the right thing in the future.

The best way to break a bad habit is to make it impractical. The most effective way to lock in future behavior is to automate your future habits. Making one-time choices - like buying a better mattress or enrolling in an automatic savings plan - can increase returns over time. By using technology to automate your habits, you can guarantee the right behavior in the most reliable and effective way.
