- His real name was George Herman Ruth
- He’s the only person in professional baseball history to have the last name “Ruth”
- No one knows exactly when he was born
- He didn’t really know either
- He thought it was Feb 7th, 1894
- Now its accepted as Feb 6th, 1895
- What his family thinks is his birth certificate says 1894 but its for an unnamed male in his family
- His parents lost 6 kids in infancy and no one is sure which birth certificate is actually his
- He started chewing and drinking before 8 years old
- He tried chewing tobacco and whiskey really young
- He ended up going to a cathlic reform school where the nuns said he was “incorrigible”
- He got the nickname “Babe” his first year playing baseball in the International League
- No one knows who gave it to him
- No one called him Babe before that
- Soon after he went to the Red Sox
- When he was presumed to be 19 he married a 16 year old
- He met her his first day in Boston
- She worked at a local coffee shop
- He was a star left-handed pitcher for the Red Sox
- Now he’s obviously more known for being one of the best sluggers on the Yankees
- In the 6 years he was with the Red Sox, they won 3 world series
- When he was traded to New York it started a long streak of loses in the World Series for the Red Sox
- Its known as the curse of Bambino
- In 1919 he hit 29 home runs, which set the new “single-season home run” record
- He beat the record again in 1920 and then 1921 again
- In 1919 only five teams hit more home runs than Ruth did by himself
- With the exception of the RedSox
- The company that made the Babe Ruth Candy bar claim that its not named after the baseball player
- The Curtiss Candy Company officially claimed that it was named after President Grover Cleveland’s daughter, Ruth
- People think that their claim is just a way to get around legal issues
