Elizabeth Báthory, the Blood Countess, was accused of torturing and murdering at least 650 young girls in the 1600s. The legends of her brutality have lasted centuries and she’s said to have played a part in author Bram Stoker’s inspiration for his 1897 gothic horror novel Dracula. However, there seems to be less fact and more fiction when it comes to what actually happened inside the walls of Castle Čachtice. Was she actually a demon murderess wreaking havoc in Hungary, committing unspeakable acts of torture and mutilation on the less fortunate, or were her accusations and imprisonment part of a conspiracy to weaken an extremely powerful, wealthy, and intelligent woman who was seen as a threat?
