TAKE HOME POINTS FROM DR DISHA SPATH

  1. If you are in consumer debt, use the debt snowball principle to climb out of debt and learn how to manage money without being too overwhelmed. Paying off the smallest bill can provide motivation and build up momentum to keep going.
  2. Cut down the fixed costs (phone plans-switching carriers, cancel unused subscriptions, change grocery stores-from Expensive to Aldi & Walmart, downsize from a big house to renting a smaller place, moving closer to grandparents to help with childcare costs.
  3. Raise your children without a silver spoon to teach them to know the importance of money and better equip them to be independent later in life.
  4. Paying off student loans may or may not be your best financial decision. Although this was the right decision for her, she emphasizes that this is not a one size fits all answer. You have to look at your unique circumstances. Do you work for a public or private institution? What is your debt to income ratio? How do you feel about debt? Is it causing you anxiety or fear?

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • How can I find the balance between being frugal and indulging in the good things
  • Do I ever find myself stuck in a scarcity mindset?
  • How can I travel in style on a budget?
  • Do I expect my spouse to take care of all the financials because of a cultural upbringing? If so, how is this serving me?
  • When I want to save money, how can I focus on fixed costs?
