Following an unfortunate series of life oopsy-daisies, musician and community radio broadcaster Scott Mercer found himself feeling alienated by the desires and habits of his fellow human beings. He began questioning the idea of the Golden Rule, centrepiece of so many philosophies and religions. In a world of myriad subcultures, mental states and identities, does "do unto others" really make sense when everybody seeks to be treated differently according to their own values? Determined not to fall into misanthropy and cynicism, Scott set about talking to his friends about their personal likes and dislikes, their dreams and routines. By finding out how others approach life, from the most mundane detail to the freakiest far-out thoughts, he attempts to fumble his way to understanding, one conversation at a time.
