Revd. Erick du Toit brings this week's reflection from Kirkliston Parish Church, Scotland.
PEACE
'Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.'
Phil. 4: 6-7]
At the Memorial service on Thursday evening past, John McPhee read this passage from Philippians stating that they (according to his Bible App) are some of the most ‘looked up’ verses of the past year.
We yearn, we long for peace, don’t we?
Whether in our personal relationships or in the world.
There seems to be a lot of the opposite: discord, chaos, war, instability, anxiety – to name but a few.
The call to follow Jesus supplies us with the knowledge that though everything is falling apart, we can still be at peace with our Maker because we’ve been reconciled to him through the blood of Christ. Peace is not the absence of war, but a conviction that you can be still before the heavenly throne because our Lord paved the way for our salvation.

And NOTHING will change that.
The thing that needs to change is us! In our passage, Luke 3 uses the word ‘metanoia’ to describe the process of turning away from your old self… what instils peace, is not only following the Prince of Peace, but becoming agents of peace ourselves…
Do you find it hard to forgive? Do you hoard grudges? Are you easily offended or angered?
These are symptoms of ‘a lack of peace’ and it requires a change. A turnaround. To repent means to make a conscious decision to alter behaviour for the sake of wholeness and well-being.

Isn’t it Jesus himself who said: ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.’?
