The "Should Spiral" is what causes Becky Berry's burnt out experience. Let's find out what the heck that is!
Who is Becky?Becky helps women stage their career comebacks. She has been everything from the owner of a software company, to social entrepreneur, to magazine publisher, to special education teacher, plus she did a 12-year stint as a stay-at-home mom.
Becky bring all of her experience to bear as she coaches women through the terror of figuring out what's next.
What is feeling Successful? It's about being content.
It's like a combination of happy, sad, striving, relaxing into whatever it is that's going on in your life, PLUS friendships.
Becky says that she is here today, standing on the shoulders of every woman (and man) friend she has ever had – so success is a stew of all those things. All these people together along with her own efforts and choices have made her feel successful.
What is feeling Burnt Out?Becky is serial entrepreneur, which, for her, means that she has no idea what she did last week.
This is also the reason she gets burnt out. She forgets all of her hard work and accomplishments because she's always on to the next thing and thinks to herself, "I should be doing more." And that, my friends, is the dangerous, blackhole of the Should Spiral.
"I should be doing more. I should be accomplishing more. I should've started earlier."
The Burnt Out Experience Becky's StoryThis "Should Spiral" is Becky's recipe for tears.
She is an entrepreneur, so apart from coaching people to lead better lives, she is also her own marketing agency, office administrator, finance specialist, decision maker – holy sh*t, right? That's a lot!!
So, when Becky starts spiraling into "I should have started marketing this earlier. I should be creating more content. I should be doing so much more…" it's a disaster.
It's makes her feel shame. It makes her feel regret. It feels horrible.
Advice for you Stop YourselfBecky says it to herself, out loud, wherever she is. When she recognizes she is in the Should Spiral, she sets herself straight.
"STOP IT."
You are doing enough. You are enough. Don't let "should" take away your power and confidence.
Remind Yourself of YesterdayWrite down all the tasks, project, chores you did yesterday or even last week. Walk through everything you did and try not to leave anything out. You will be amazed at all you accomplished.
This will help get your mindset into the right place. You do A LOT!! Don't forget that.
Focus on TodayNow, get ready to accomplish more today.
Make a list, mind map, set of goals and go for it. Make it happen because you can, not because you "should".
