To give rebuke to another Jew is something fraught with significant danger since it can easily be taken as an affront to his self esteem. Two common undesirable outcomes from rebuking someone is either defensiveness or distress. The Rambam tells us the proper way of admonishing is with a calm and soft voice while communicating in a clear way that its purely for the benefit of the subject. This approach is not a "preferable" one rather it is the only one. Rav Chaim Volozhin writes if one is unable to convey care with his rebuke in a clear and loving way then he is absolved from this mitzvah.
