Get Your Shift Together

39. Getting beyond shame and guilt after a Mom Rage episode

Listen Later

Mom rage is real. Most moms have experienced it in their lives... the out of body experience of intense, explosive anger that isn't quite anger but something MORE than that. The primal noises, the shouting, the outbursts at the slightest provocations.

Feeling shame and guilt after is often quite common. Like "whoa, who was that just now... I can't believe I [insert a horrible thing you did here]." And of course if you're doing your best to be a conscious, gentle, respectful, loving, caring parent, you may spiral into a deep pit of shame. You may begin to feel super guilty and kick yourself with thoughts like, "I KNOW BETTER... what am I doing? Who have I become? Why are things this way?!"

Be gentle with yourself. Mom rage often signals that we have some needs that are going unmet. There's no breathing room. Mom rage maybe needed to happen to help you see that, and when you see you CAN shift. So let's shift into seeing from the perspective of what can be done after a rage episode?

The impact of rage on a child can be negative, but you can focus your attention on something that is helpful and can impact your child in a way that has the power to override that rage, and that is REPAIR. All is not lost, mama.
