3D Fruit Form Reconstruction with Dr. Mitchell Feldmann

Listen Later

"Cost-effective, high-throughput phenotyping system for 3D reconstruction of fruit form" with Dr. Mitchell Feldmann

Various research and breeding programs study phenotypical traits—or traits that can be discerned via the five senses—to evaluate the quality of their target crops. However, getting data on these traits, often via human-made measurements, can be time-consuming, subjective, and inaccurate, hampering research efforts. This episode of the Field, Lab, Earth podcast, Mitchell discusses his work developing a high-throughput, affordable way to capture one important phenotypical trait: fruit shape.

Tune in to learn:

  • Why it's important to accurately measure fruit shape
  • How consumers consider shape, size, and color when making purchasing decisions
  • How Mitchell and his partner developed their system
  • What kinds of fruits and other shapes they tested
