The night was Dark. . . .    No, that’s not right.

Dark was the night. . .      still not there.

Always Dark was the Knight. . .    way to pretentious.

OK, Batman’s dark, we get it, but is this story that dark?  Well, it starts with nary a word (“nary”?, Eh, go with it.)  It’s true, the first part only has two spoken words.

The second part though, that one gets a bit wordy and the third is a patented Byrne data dump.  The question is: Is it a good story?

Well, in a special episode of 3rd Degree Byrne (We’ll call it a “SideByrne”) Brian Hughes and son Christopher look at and break down John Byrne’s “The Many Deaths of the Batman”  a three-issue tale of murder and intrigue, art by Jim Aparo.

This is a fun one with a Christopher providing a much younger perspective on the Dark Knight’s tale. This, of course is a bit different in that we are covering a story where the only art provided by Byrne was for the covers.  We do discuss Aparo’s art and how it had changed up to his late 80’s work, but really the focus is on the story by Byrne.  There are some good questions posed here as we discuss why Byrne did not do more Batman with his time at DC as well as what the aftermath of this story would be and what it should be.
