#4 - Anju Bobby George on Becoming an Athletics World Champion, Russian "Cheaters" at the 2004 Olympics, the State of Indian Athletics | The Anubhav Jain Show
Anju Bobby George is a former Athletics World Champion in the Long Jump event. During her active years as an athlete, she represented India at the biggest of stages, including the Olympic Games and the Senior World Athletics Championships.
It's been anything but smooth sailing for this legend. Anju did not mince her words during this conversation while talking about the trials and tribulations that she had to go through before becoming the first Indian to win a medal at a Senior World Athletics Championships when she bagged bronze at the 2003 edition of this competition in Paris, in spite of some foul play on the part of the organizers. Believe it or not, her bronze, as of the day of publishing of this podcast, still remains India's only medal at a Senior World Championship.
She extensively described how, despite having high fever, she was able to pull off a career best jump of 6.83 meters at the 2004 Athens Olympics. This jump should have won her a silver medal had it not been for the three Russians, whom she calls "cheaters", who finished on the podium but were later tested positive for banned substances. Despite this development, these three Russians were not stripped of their respective medals. Although it's been about 16 years since that saga came to light, Anju continues to indefatigably fight for justice and remains hopeful of being awarded the silver medal on a retroactive basis.
She and her coach-cum-husband, Bobby George, to whom she attributes the lion's share of her success, are nurturing the next generation of Indian athletes through the Anju Bobby Sports Foundation. This is why both Anju and Bobby remain optimistic about India's Athletics future despite Indian athletes having flattered to deceive at the biggest of stages such as the Olympics so far.
We ended proceedings with a rapid-fire Q&A, which began with Anju being on the backfoot but ended with she being at her rapid, fiery, and candid best! All in all, this was a beautiful and deeply inspiring conversation with this champion!
