As leaders, we need to manage our own emotions so that the people we lead can manage theirs. How can we do this? When we understand the difference between above and below the line thinking, and work on bringing our thinking above the line, we begin to see what's possible. 

It means we can then empathize when others are below the line and, in turn, help them bring their thinking above the line. This will influence their thinking and emotions will be less likely to impact on their actions. This saves time, keeps everyone calm and more able to find solutions and know what action to take next.
