Today I’m going to teach you four simple steps to create your own great DIY web videos. It’s becoming more and more common for people to shoot their own web videos. In most cases it’s best to work with a professional but there are situations like shooting a quick update for your blog or social media post were user generated content works fine. Unfortunately in an effort to keep costs down and without the right knowledge and experience there’s some really sub-standard videos being produced. Bad lighting and sound are sure-fire ways to get your audience to switch off and the danger with this is that it can undermine your whole brand. So you should hire professional video production company to get the best results but sometimes you just need to create a quick, no frills video to something like your face book page in your blog. So if you decide to produce your own with video content, here four simple steps you can take to get the best results possible. Lighting. Because you probably won’t have any professional lighting equipment, it’s important to make do with what you actually have available. So, if you’re in a room with large windows try sitting facing the window. You might need to turn all the lights on in the room you’re in if natural light isn’t really available. Try to avoid sitting in between the camera and a bright light source. The camera will probably be set to auto-exposure and will make you look dark inside the video. Framing. As a rule of thumb try to make sure the presenters eyes are two-thirds of the way up the screen. This will make sure we don’t have too much headroom or space above the presenters head and the top of the frame. Having too much dead space above the presenter will not only make it look poorly composed but it will actually psychologically diminish the presenters authority to your viewers. Sound It’s very easy to overlook or underestimate sound when recording your video. A really common mistake is to record sound through the on-camera microphone and placing the camera far away from presenter and the problem with that is that it’s going to cause a lot of background noise and you’re not going to hear the presenter clearly. So, to record good quality sound either move the presenter close to your sound recording device, or better yet, use a lapel microphone that clips onto the presenter’s collar. Remember also to close any windows that may be around and turn off any electrical equipment that produces noise. So by doing this you’re going to make your filming location as quiet as possible and you’re going to hear the presenter as well as possible. Be natural. When presenting try to be as conversational and natural as possible. Imagine you’re sitting and talking to a client or a colleague. Don’t mimic tv personality presentation styles, it’s going to come across as contrived and you’re viewers will see right through it. The more authentic you are the more engaging you’re going to be. When hiring professionals isn’t an option these four simple steps will help you achieve the best possible results from your next DIY web video.
