Within the church, Lent is a season lasting 40 days that invites us to not only to revisit what Christ suffered for our sake, but to examine and refine ourselves.  God’s Word clearly acknowledges the fact that we will fall short. 

Colossians 3:5  'So put to death and deprive of power the evil longings of your earthly body, with its sensual, self-centered instincts, immorality, impurity, sinful passion, evil desire, and greed, which is a kind of idolatry because it replaces your devotion to God.'  (AMP)

The cravings, desires, and longings become the greater idol.

It isn’t until we are able to clearly confront these idols, to name them, that we can strip them of power and once again fix our gaze first and foremost on God. Then we find peace in the storm.  Then we find rescue in darkness.
