Summer Morris is a Certified Public Accountant and Quickbooks online expert with her own accounting firm in Northern California. She explored the transition points for business owners when moving from self-managed QuickBooks to hiring bookkeepers and CPAs, while emphasizing the need for accurate financial records and proper transaction categorization.

Addressing the question of, “Do I hire a CPA or a bookkeeper?” Summer pointed out that the typical sequence of events usually begins with a small business owner maintaining their own Quickbooks initially and then seeking out a CPA to assist with planning and tax matters.  Summer explained that business owners should consider hiring a bookkeeper when QuickBooks tasks start taking away from income-generating activities, and she typically helps new clients set up their QuickBooks and then find a bookkeeper.

Since the CPA will ultimately be receiving data and correspondence from the bookkeeper in order to prepare reports and taxes for the business, they become an ideal person to assist in the hiring and oversight on the bookkeeper.
