Most of us have heard this before:

“Hey I saw your doppelganger the other day, I thought it was you for a moment”.

That is what the word “doppelganger” means today - another person that looks similar to, but still distinct from, yourself. A twin stranger. However in folklore, the original meaning is much more sinister. The doppelganger is a harbinger of doom, and seeing your own ghostly double might just mean certain death.
