The History Of The Evergreen State

41- The Battle of Seattle

Listen Later

The Battle of Seattle was part of the Puget Sound War, and pitted the United States Navy against fighters from several tribes in the area. Several tribal leaders took to the streets in order to force a better agreement or to expel the whites from their traditional lands as a result of the treaties of 1854-55 not being approved by Congress for more than three years and many of the benefits for tribes being reduced, delayed, and disputed.
By the end of 1855, European American settlers in the Puget Sound region were in grave danger of being attacked by armed bandits.
During the early hours of the 26th of January, 1856, Native Americans launched an attack on Seattle, following months of raids and clashes with federal forces in southern King County and Thurston County, respectively.
