Have you ever thought "oh, this song will take me 2 hours to complete" only to find that you're still working through details a week (or a year!) later?

There is a LOT to do to get an idea into a finished song. Who will write the lyrics? Do we need a guitar part in the bridge? How will we record the drums? Who will edit vocals? Will we outsource mixing or DIY?

All of these different tasks and questions can start to seem overwhelming - especially if you're a completely solo DIY artist.

We've found that it can be very helpful to break this process down into different groups of tasks and, instead of thinking about "people", we will think about "roles". This method of grouping asks can prove to be a very helpful thought exercise whether you're in a band or hacking through it completely on your own because it helps you understand what needs to be done, who will do it, and how to stay focused on the task at hand instead of jumping around wildly from task to task.

In this episode you will learn:

  • Why different roles are important to consider - even (and perhaps especially) in a DIY recording situation
  • What the different roles in the recording process are
  • How to use the concept of roles to maximize your focus and productivity
  • Ben's funny story about running into a quirky role in a commercial Nashville studio
  • Why the guys love Eddie Van Halen - the guitar legend, not the vampire slayer.
