After the Doctor and Sarah Jane have a strange encounter with a living energy structure known as the Mandragora Helix in another dimension, a rogue fragment hitches a ride on the TARDIS and leads the pair to 15th century Italy, landing just before the Renaissance. There, palace intrigue plays out while the machinations of a sinister cult’s quest for power are further manipulated by the Mandragora fragment dead set on keeping Italy firmly in the Dark Ages by swallowing the moon.
