Just as Moses thinks that the future settlement of Canaan is in the bag, he is hit by a massive curveball. Two of the tribes who he was planning to have in his all-conquering army decide not to cross the river into the promised land. Israel's leader is furious and as the Book of Numbers reaches its season finale, the nation's future has never seemed more precarious.
