Imperfect Parenting with a Perfect God

43. Money Talks with Kids

Listen Later

On a scale from 1-10, 10 being the most, how comfortable are you about talking to your kids about money? Did you know that you can talk to them about money without talking to them about the specific details about your personal budget? It's true! I grew up in a house where money was a taboo topic of conversation. Therefore, I grew up not knowing anything about how to manage money. I was thrown into the real world, having to earn money to pay for college on my own, as well as somehow manage to budget for expenses like car insurance, gas, and food, with no wisdom on the subject. You may as well have thrown me to the wolves. It turns out that a lot of my assumptions about these things were right on, but unfortunately, they were not solid and I swayed from them a lot and suffered for it.

When my husband and I got married, we had to also merge our financial worlds into one. That has been quite a ride. There are still many habits that we are each trying to fix or form but because we have taken the time to invest into becoming knowledgeable about money, we have the vocabulary to have the conversation. We agreed that we wanted to make sure that we raise kids who are armed with biblical and practical wisdom that align so that they can do the best they can with this awesome gift that God has given each of us. It is a tool that we can use to love others through and with. We are not afraid to talk about money with our kids, and even talk about the mistakes we have made because we want them to do better than we did and be able to be a blessing in this world as well as have security. I pray that all future generations will somehow become wiser with finances and money than the previous generation. Time will tell.

Scriptures in this podcast:

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

1 Tim. 6:10

He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity.

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

Matt. 6:24

Prov. 3:9-10

Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

Rom. 13:8

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matt. 6:21

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.

Malachi 3:10

Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.

Prov. 11:4

Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise: Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer;
