Even though Peter failed Jesus miserably, Jesus wanted him to know that he was not dead, but alive.  Between the failure and the empty tomb, was the cross.  All that Peter had done to deny any association with Jesus was forgiven by the blood shed on the cross. No matter what you have done is in the past.  Jesus is able and ready to forgive you and accept you into the fold as one of his.
