In this week’s episode of Sermons on the Side, Richard reaches back into his early parenthood days to share a powerful story about his two sons, Bryce and Derrick… and a throwback classic: the Bionicle Lego toy. When Derrick secretly takes Bryce’s prized Bionicle to school and loses it, he returns home overwhelmed with guilt and fear of what his brother will say. 

After a heartfelt father-son conversation about honesty, courage, and doing what’s right, Derrick breaks down - not because he doesn’t know what to do, but because he doesn’t want to face it alone. That’s when Richard offers the words that changed everything:

“You have to have the conversation… but you don’t have to do it alone.”

In that moment, Richard realized those words weren’t just for his son - they were a reminder from God for all of us. No matter how difficult the conversation, how heavy the truth, or how uncertain the next step… we don’t walk into it by ourselves. God promises His presence, His guidance, and His strength. 

We connect this to the powerful truth of Exodus 33:14–15, where Moses tells God, “If Your presence does not go with us, we don’t even want to go.” It’s a fresh reminder that courage isn’t the absence of fear — it’s the confidence that God goes with us into every hard moment.
