44. There is no hack to a creative life
This week’s podcast is on how you can’t hack creativity.
There's no quick fix to honing a film or a song or a a novel that actually has real value to yourself and to others.
This idea that we can hack everything, ‘how to hack becoming famous’ etc. Yes, you could become Instagram fabulous. And if you are brilliant, well done.
But actually the creative stuff, it takes time. You need to hone your skills.
Even if you have the most amazing idea for Say,a Song or a film script,
you still have to sit there and do the work to get it onto the paper or on to the stage and hone your skills as you go.
Accepting the fact that you can't hack a creative life, you might be able to have one brilliant idea that flies
but then you've got to come up with the next and the next, and we all know that this… some people so often just see the ‘oh, you know, they released the first novel and it just stormed it and it was in the bestseller list’. However we all know the work that's gone behind editing, finding an editor, writing it,
making the adjustments, you know, dealing with the facts. eg There's some real problems going on with chapter 10, or whatever.
So, This is a call out for all of us including myself to basically just settle down.
No, I can't hack it. I know enough, I've made enough shows over the last, what 20 years of making my own work be it writing, writing songs, writing books, writing shows, I've made web series and films, a documentary.
Just settle down. Know it's a process.
You're not always going to want to turn up for your life and your work every day.
That's just natural. But every day,
Choose Yourself.
So every day take a step forward in terms of honing, your craft and every day take a step forward in building a better creative career be it networking, going to something, seeing some work.
There's no hack to having a full creative life sure, people might love you for doing a particular show.
Barry Humphries, the creator behind Dame Edna, (a friend of mine has followed him for literally decades) and he said, Dame Edna is probably the 27th character that Barry Humphries came up with and that's the one everybody wants and he always introduces new characters and then he does these tours and introduces the new character of the beginning of the run. However by the time he's finished at all, there's more Dame,
Edna in still and those new characters get faded to smaller sections, because everyone loves Dame Edna so much. That don't just stop Barry Humphries from keep on performing and creating, absolutely not.
whatever he does he gets better at it.
I couldn't have made my Queen Of The F*cking World show without the thousands of hours of me being The Singing Psychic improvising on stage,
I can say that now only after the fact of my tens of thousands of hours on stage across the world, in lots of different environments, improvising, working a room, my audience understanding undoubtedly makes me a much performer. My singing now versus 20 years ago has to be better, how can it not be? Unless I never practiced or took lessons.
We don't always see the incremental growth, our growth, so you can't hack creativity or rather you can't hack a creative life.

About me, Marysia Trembecka
I am at heart a storyteller and this has translated from the initial creation of work to being a performer, including film and theatre acting, writing and performing international touring comedy shows to MCing.
Highlights include sell-out Adelaide and Edinburgh Fringe shows, singing at the Royal Festival Hall in 23 different languages, as well as doing TEDx talks and corporate gigs, such as the Brit Awards Afterparty at the 02 as my ‘The Singing Psychic’ bio queen character.
My ‘THE SINGING PSYCHIC’ who ‘reads the songs in your heart’ also has a GAME SHOW version, and was a finalist in Best Show, Funny Women in 2016, and I have toured internationally since then.
I have also produced five webseries as the character including my 23 episode SONGS OF BREXIT webseries I made for the June 2016 EU Referendum, on the pros and cons of the EU, I started the web series singing The Clash’s ‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go Now’. It was very wll received due to the blend of education and entertainment, and I ended up on London Live and even a BBC2 Live Debate on the National Living Wage amongst other press of the back of that.
I also was awarded Arts Council funding for research on a solo show on how we are all judged by our sexuality, so as part of that, I interviewed people on the cutting edge of sexual politics. From this I then created another character ‘Queen Of The F*cking World’ which has also toured internationally from Glasgow WOFF film festival in the female perspective strand to sell-out London, Edinburgh and Adelaide runs. I sing and play the bass guitar and guitar in this show.
My film acting credits can be found on IMDB and indeed my projects are on my media gallery
