44: Training and thinking like an athlete with Shane Miller

Listen Later

Shane Miller was born and raised here in Colorado. He grew up playing soccer, basketball, baseball, and downhill skiing.
Baseball was his biggest passion though, and he played all the way through college. Shane wasn't the most naturally gifted player. He knew he had to work harder than most, and that meant coming in early, staying late, and using strength and conditioning to maximize his talent.
In this interview, Shane mentions a mentor of his who showed him how a strength coach could pull out the talent from his athletes.
Shane saw what strength and conditioning were able to do for athletes' careers, and it was a way for him to stay involved in sports.
He talks about how he's always wanted to be better than he was, and he wanted the results fast. Now he's learned to have patience.
That's something he teaches his clients at Project Move.
He likes to walk them around and show them the rope that they'll eventually climb or the weight that they'll lift one day. But it's a project. You won't get there overnight. You have to be patient.
"We don't have to be the fittest man or woman in the world or the most elite athlete. But while we're training let's be disciplined and do everything we can to have no regrets. Set out to achieve your goals, not someone else's."

Shane sees all kinds of people walk through the doors at Project Move.
He says,
Most people want to look good, feel good, and get the most out of their body.
People often come to Project Move for that performance element and to discover their potential.
Be patient and commit to the process.
It can take six months to sometimes two years for tissues to remodel, and for motor abilities like strength and movement quality to really develop.
You'll probably see some quick gains when you first start, but keep a long term mentality and imagine what you can do in six months to  a
year.
