45: How to Build Precincts That Last

Listen Later

Episode Summary

In this episode, Richard sits down with Dr Kate Meyrick, Director at Urbis, to unpack what really separates precincts that thrive from those that don’t deliver on their promise. Kate shares her inspiration to pursue her PhD, ‘On Track for Transformation’, which grew out of two career losses on major rail regeneration bids, and set her on a path to understand why some cities capture the full benefit of transit investment while others fall short.

Kate explores the key findings from her research, which studied 26 cities and 38 rail corridors worldwide. Sustainable transport emerges as the strongest predictor of a city's long term success, but only when land use and transit planning are genuinely integrated and government commitment holds firm across political cycles. Kate also highlights the surprising power of place as a supercharger of value, using King's Cross and London Bridge, two precincts in the same city with very different outcomes, to bring the point to life.

The conversation turns to what this means for Australia today, from Sydney's transit strategy and Brisbane's Olympic legacy to Melbourne's Suburban Rail Loop, before closing on the lessons government needs to learn if these enormous infrastructure investments are going to deliver for generations, not just election cycles.
