From Hong Kong and Manila to Berlin and New York City, Jana Benitz is a visual artist and one of the roster artists of Pearl Lam Galleries in Hong Kong. She has been featured in Tatler Magazine, The Inquirer, and even appeared on CNN Philippines. Dubbed a wunderkind, she debuted in a solo show at age 12 at the Ayala Museum in Metro Manila and again at age 14 at the Walter Wickiser Gallery in New York City. Fast forward to today, Jana divides her time between various studios in the United States while exhibiting all over the world. In this episode, Jana shares how she uses fasting and constraints, such as a limited color palette, to help refocus her artwork. Jana also explains what it means to “peel back the layers” and address difficult histories without placing blame. Be sure to listen to the whole episode to learn how Jana unlocks and transforms emotions through art and how one professor’s assignment still informs her painting today.
