Effective this month (July 1, 2021), the NCAA announced an interim policy that allows individual student athletes from all three college sports division levels to monetize their name, image and likeness (NIL). This broad policy for college athletes is still in a grey cloud because the new guidance isn’t a federal law, so each athlete’s money-making activities are governed by the law of the state where the school is located. It also allows students in states without NIL laws to participate without breaking NCAA rules too. There’s a lot for these college kids to unpack with the “dos and don’ts” and cans and cant’s of this wild, wild west of the new rule. The most important thing about this change is that our athletes be proactive about maximizing this opportunity to participate in the monetization of the big business of college sports.
