#46: Living in a Materia World

Listen Later

Final Fantasy VII Remake is up there with... well, the last Final Fantasy game released, on my list of games I can't believe are actually out and playable right now. It's been a very, very long road for seminal RPG of the PlayStation era. This game's existence has been talked about since the PlayStation 2 era, first glimpsed as a tech demo prior to the release of PlayStation 3, and finally announced as officially being in development for PlayStation 4 at E3 2015, earning Sony's presser the loving title of "Year of Dreams" from fans. Now, 23 years after the original title's release in 1997, we have a true top-to-bottom remake of one of the greatest games ever created made for modern times and modern players. Ethan, Drew and Travis all have had a chance to spend a roughly similar amount of time with the game, and provide a spoiler-free breakdown of what they've seen so far. After spending some time in Midgar it's time to return to the real world though, where companies like Sony have to take a hard look at the realities we're facing and potentially limit the amount of PlayStation 5 consoles they can provide while still launching this Fall. We put a lot of thought into what Sony's and Microsoft's strategies look like with next generation around the corner and the world economy continuing to reel from COVID-19. PlayStation launched a new "Play At Home" initiative this week, giving away games to take you to new worlds, as well as offering a helping hand to indie devs struggling without big publisher support. Gamescom officially announces it's cancellation as Germany extends its lockdown through August, but confirms they'll be taking the world's biggest gaming event online this year. Crytek aims to put an end to the meme of "will it run Crysis?!" by making a remaster of the first game in the series and releasing it on everything, even the Switch! CDPR gives more updates on Cyberpunk 2077, the story of Cooking Mama: Cookstar continues to develop and there's just no stopping Resident Evil from making the news cycle.
