From Project BFF HQ, Terri + Manya riff about how to talk with friends who have different political views.
Is it even possible to have friends with different political views? Yes--in a Pew study a few years ago, 40% of people didn't have a close friend who voted for a different presidential candidate. That means 60% did.
It can be a challenge to discuss differing political views with someone when being a supporter of a particular politician or party is a strong part of one’s sense of identity. That can make it easier to view the other side in a negative way.
There is value in having friends with different political views--the echo chamber, thanks to how we consume media, can make it so that we don't get to hear different viewpoints and friends can help us expand our thinking in that way.
