Since the early 1880s, there has been a mass exodus of people from the mountains of Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina to the mountains of the western Evergreen State and Oregon. From over-populated and over-exploited mountain regions to sparsely occupied and unexplained mountain regions two thousand miles apart. This movement primarily occurred between 1900 and 1917. Although no statistics are really available, it is certain that the movement boosted the rural and mountain population in the western portion of the Evergreen State by a large amount.
