President Biden has referred to the US as an “arsenal of democracy,” symbolized by military aid to Ukraine. The US indeed is far and away the world leader in military spending and arms exports. It also leads, not coincidentally, in domestic arms sales and gun violence. Thus, the US is an arsenal, but not of democracy.
