The Emily Eliza Moyer Show

48. Emotion are not problems, they're tools with emotion expert Karla McLaren

Listen Later

If I had to pick one book to gift to every person I met for the rest of my life, it would be The Language of Emotions by Karla McLaren. Karla is the original expert on emotions and frankly, her book helped me go from being someone who got *completely* overwhelmed by emotions like sadness, fear, panic, depression, and anxiety to who I am now: a woman who can flow with her emotions and ultimately, feel far more at peace than I ever have because I "speak" emotion. In this episodes, Karla shared so much of her truly life-changing wisdom with us including:

  • addressing the biggest misunderstanding we all have about emotions: that there are "negative" and "positive" emotions
  • the REAL purpose emotions have in our lives (they are not just a nuisance we are meant to "overcome")
  • why we both think that the typical rhetoric you hear in spiritual communities can actually be incredibly detrimental to us
  • the role emotions are meant to play in helping us grow our businesses, making money and create success
  • what messages emotions like anger, shame, anxiety, panic, depression and even suicidal urges have for us and why we *must* learn to interpret these messages

There aren't words to describe how transformational Karla's work has been on my life. I urge you to buy a copy of The Language of Emotions (paperback so you can highlight, take notes and reference it!!!)

She now also has The Power of Emotions at Work, Embracing Anxiety, and The Language of Emotions Workbook! You can also check out her online community EmpathyAcademy.org, her new podcast The Off-Ramp Project and her Instagram.
