Besides for honoring parents there is an additional mitzvah to honor a brother, mother's husband, and fathers wife from the verse [(Shemoth 20:12): "Honor your father and [ve'eth] your mother," as explained in Kethuvoth 103a)]. Unfortunately people assume there may be an allowance to speak ill about family but in actuality it's more severe. The basic mitzvah of honoring parents are made of two categories: honor and revere. To revere parents practically means not to stand/sit in their place, contradict their words, and not to declare his parents correct as if his position on the matter has standing. To honor parents is to give them food, drink, clothing, and providing transportation. If a parent makes a request of a child, the Sefer HaMiknah says including in "not contradicting their words" is following an action they say to do. Besides for the activities mentioned in the Shulchan Aruch, a person is also required to honor his parents in his mind and view them as uniquely special people. The way to come to this is by noticing their positive attributes and appreciate them to the degree that there is no parallel to them in the world.

Chofetz Chaim, Introduction (Asei)

וְאִם הוּא אָחִיו הַגָּדוֹל (י) אוֹ בַּעַל אִמוֹ אוֹ אֵשֶׁת אָבִיו, עוֹבֵר גַּם כֵּן עַל מִצְוַת עֲשֵׂה דְּכִבּוּד, דְּאִתְרַבּוּ מֵרִבּוּיָא (שמות כ' י"ב) דִּ''וְאֶת'', כִּדְאָמְרִינַן בִּכְתֻבּוֹת (דף ק"ג) וְכָל שֶׁכֵּן אִם, חַס וְשָׁלוֹם, עַל אָבִיו וְאִמוֹ מַמָשׁ, דְּוַדַּאי עוֹבֵר עַל מִצְוַת עֲשֵׂה דְּכִבּוּד אָב וָאֵם. מִלְּבַד כָּל זֶה עוֹבֵר גַּם כֵּן עַל (דברים כ"ז ט"ז): "אָרוּר מַקְלֶה אָבִיו וְאִמוֹ'', ה' יִשְׁמְרֵנוּ.

Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De'ah 240:1,4

איזו מורא לא יעמוד במקומו המיוחד לו לעמוד שם בסוד זקנים עם חביריו או מקום המיוחד לו להתפלל ולא ישב במקום המיוחד לו להסב בביתו ולא סותר את דבריו ולא מכריע את דבריו בפניו אפילו לומר נראין דברי אבא ולא יקראנו בשמו לא בחייו ולא במותו אלא אומר אבא מארי היה שם אביו כשם אחרים משנה שמם אם הוא שם שהוא פלאי שאין הכל רגילים לקרות בו. אבל שם שרגילין בו מותר לקרות אחרים שלא בפניו (טור):

איזהו כבוד מאכילו ומשקהו מלביש ומכסה מכניס ומוציא ויתננו לו בסבר פנים יפות שאפי' מאכילו בכל יום פטומות והראה לו פנים זועפות נענש עליו:

Chayei Adam 67:3

הכבוד הוא במחשבה ובמעשה ובדבור. במחשבה כדכתיב נבזה בעיניו נמאס ואת יראי ה' יכבד והיינו יכבד במחשבה דא"ל שבלבו ובעיניו הם נבזים רק שמכבד אותם בדברים אם כן שוין בעיניו כמוהו שהרי גם הוא נבזה בעיניו אע"כ דר"ל שמכבדם בלבו שהם חשובים בעיניו ובלבו דהיינו שידמה בעיניו שהם גדולים ונכבדי ארץ אף שבעיני שאר בני אדם אינם חשובים כלל וזהו עיקר כיבוד שאל"כ הרי כתיב בפיו ובשפתיו כבדוני ולבו רחק ממני כמו שכתבתי:
