In the west, “it is now open warfare”, according to a soldier's diary, with rapid movement of men and vehicles as the Allies try to press their advantage over Germany. In the east, German troops continue to grab territory from the disintegrated Russian Empire. And in the United States, prominent socialist Eugene Debs is sentenced to 10 years in prison for speaking out against the war.
