Missing friends who have left for transformative experiences without you — they will not come back as they were; they have surpassed you, and everyone knows it. The things we do in life that cannot be taken back leave wounds no single lifetime of good deeds can expunge. Yes, you should have bought that charcoal drawing that depicted your doubt, your hope, your paralysis in the face of the galactic consequences of even the most innocent choices.
