Do not let anyone dictate what you have to grow in order to be a gardener.  If you don't have much outdoor space to start a garden, maybe you should turn your focus to inside.  Houseplants are a great way to begin or even extend your gardening journey.  Like vegetable gardening there are plants that are easy to grow than others.
