Your personal branding is a living thing. It will change - you will grow. Branding isn't meant to be one size fits all. Once you know the basics behind branding and marketing, everything gets easier. You can update and grow your brand, but the principles behind what you’re doing don’t change.
I recommend that you take time once a quarter to review your branding. Here are 5 fast and easy ways to develop your brand.
KNOW WHO YOU ARE
Get comfortable with regularly assessing yourself and your needs. Ask questions like:
DEFINE YOUR AUDIENCE
Knowing who you are serving in your brand is key. I go deep into this in episode 50.
Who you serve changes. People get older, opinions change, technology changes, countries, laws, social agendas change. So many things are shifting. If you haven’t revisited this one in a while, might I suggest that you do.
How do you define your audience? You can use data to define your audience, such as age, gender and location. But I suggest using personas to identify your audience. This includes things such as personal characteristics, lifestyles, morals and values, interests, engagement in social media networks and more.
RESEARCH AND UNDERSTAND INDUSTRY LEADERS
Do some solid research into what successful people in your field are doing. Examine what they are doing and why they are doing it. Then determine where you fit in. Can you serve in a different way?
Listen to the way they speak, how they show up. If everyone is saying the same thing and looking the same way, you can have the advantage of having a different point of view.
But DO NOT COPY. #notcool.
EMBRACE NETWORKING
Networking is about making connections. Connections where you can learn and grow. Connections where you can teach and serve. Connections where you can increase your opportunities and connections where you can provide better opportunities for your clients.
Networking is an excellent way to open doors that you may have thought would never be opened.
REMEMBER THAT YOUR PERSONAL BRAND ISN’T JUST ONLINE
Your online brand is vital, but it’s equally important to make sure that you are building a consistent brand offline as well.
Because you are a human being behind that computer screen or iphone. What are you doing in your daily life, at home, in the office, on your commute? What systems do you have in place that help work towards and create your brand?
Building brand authority comes from authenticity and people will be able to see through you if you choose to live a life that is inauthentic to your brand. That connection that you want to create with your audience will never be a powerful force if you choose to live a life offline that isn’t consistent online.
