#5: How to Process Your Problems

To process and transform your problems you can’t just think and talk about them. You must learn how to use your senses--seeing, hearing, feeling, and moving--to engage with your perceptions in real time. This involves far more than just observing what’s going on in yourself, as, for example, one does in mindfulness meditation (although mindfulness is a foundational tool of the work). It requires interacting with your thoughts, feelings, and inner parts by dialoguing, playacting, visualizing, and expressing yourself physically. This leads to a visceral experience of your authentic being instead of just trying to figure yourself out.

As you work on your process in this experiential way, your problem will begin to morph and change. It will lose its original form and become merely a springboard for your personal growth. What seems like a meaningless, fixed condition that you wish would just go away becomes a meaningful, fluid process--an unfolding story that informs and transforms your consciousness. What appears to be a pathology in your life turns out to be the doorway to inner strength, healing, freedom, and success.
